History of Lakeland, Florida
The very first residents of Lakeland, Florida, were the Tocobago, Timucua and Calusa Indian tribes who settled on the Florida peninsula right about the end of the last ice age. In the early 16th century, Spanish settlers showed up, and in the following couple of centuries, these initial Americans were significantly reduced by a mixture of infection, enslavement and total eradication — the ones that got left behind, settled with the Creek Indians who had migrated to become part of the Indian Seminole tribe.
And in 1845 Florida had become a State, and then in 1861 Polk County was recognized. Following the American Civil War, the county seat was set up in Bartow southeast of Lakeland. While most of the historical past of Polk County focused on the two towns of Fort Meade and Bartow, people soon crossed the areas of northern Polk County and began to settle in the locations that would become Lakeland. Lakeland was established during the 1870s and rapidly developed in 1884 as the train lines finally reached the zone. And in 1883, Freedmen decided to settle in the city, beginning the advancement of Moorehead's African- American town. Lakeland then was established on 1 January 1885. Abraham Munn, a man who is 1882 bought 320,000 m2 of land in what is now downtown Lakeland, founded the city and in 1884 fortified the town's property. Lakeland was named for the town's numerous surrounding lakes. In July 2006, Scott Lake, one of the city's lakes, was depleted entirely by a group of sinkholes. The lake later in part refilled
